In this war of words rests the very future of women’s rights
conflated, concepts vanish. In George Orwell’s 1984 the Ministry of Truth wipes words from the state’s lexicon because “a heretical thought … should be literally unthinkable at least so far as thought is dependent upon words”. A raging debate over the definitions of “gender” and “sex” may sound dry, pedantic, obsessive or arcane. Yet in this war of words rests the very future of women’s rights. [..]
If sex and gender identity are the same, a male person does not just have the human right to live as a woman free from violence and discrimination, or be granted social and legal recognition as a woman. (Which most feminists wholeheartedly support.) What is now claimed is that such a male is biologically female. From this bizarre science-denial stem many absurdities: a penis is not necessarily a male organ, therefore a teenage male who identifies as a girl cannot be denied entry to female showers because, regardless of physical appearance, they are also “female”.
The problem for the world’s women is that biological sex is not some abstract idea or inner feeling. From menstruation to menopause, pregnancy to birth, abortion to rape, it is a vivid reality. That women’s oppression is “on the basis of sex” is why generations of feminists sought legislation for sex-based rights such as maternity leave and single-sex spaces such as rape crisis centres. In India, activists demand toilets for girls who are sexually assaulted while defecating in fields. Child brides in Afghanistan or female genital mutilation (FGM) victims in Somalia do not suffer because of a nebulous inner identity but the immutable sex of their bodies. […]
Terminology which erases women’s material reality is not only degrading but impairs our ability to protect existing rights. “A woman’s right to choose,” was a powerful 1970s slogan in the battle for legal abortion. Yet in October when Polish women marched against their government’s virtual banning of abortion, Amnesty International produced a baffling poster saying: “I stand with people in Poland.” But which people? The right-wing populist politicians? The Catholic clerics? Hog-tied by biological denial, Amnesty could not bring itself to utter the name of those who risk bleeding to death in the backstreet clinics of Gdansk: women. Moreover if reproductive rights are no longer women’s rights but “people’s rights”, “a woman’s right to choose” dissolves. It follows that “people” should determine the outcome of a pregnancy, including men.
Even campaigners against FGM are now accused of transphobia because under gender-neutral ideology the clitoris, which is sliced off little girls, cannot be categorised as an exclusively female organ. As the anti FGM-campaigner Nimco Ali tells me, “the idea womanhood doesn’t exist impacts the most vulnerable women in the world, and these happen to be women of colour”. Or as JK Rowling put it in a tweet which began her vilification across the globe: “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased."
Bleeder, labourer, ovary-haver, birthing parent … is the entity which performs these disparate functions even fully human?
Will the outrage over this persuade Biden and co. to reconsider? The problem is now of course, having made this stand and signed the executive order, that any back-tracking will be seized on as evidence of transphobia. I can't see it happening. But we shall see.

Bureau 325
1 and Phase 2 clinical trials have been completed so far, while Phase 3 clinical trials are currently underway on suspected COVID-19 patients, according to the source.
The Biological Industry Research Center of Kim Il Sung University is reportedly handling major research on the vaccine development….
North Korean authorities have recently created a new “hacking organization” dedicated to stealing information on COVID-19, including vaccine development technology, based on the source’s account.
According to the source, the new organization is called Bureau 325 and it operates under the Reconnaissance General Bureau while receiving direct orders from the Central Committee. The source claims that the group immediately reports major technology-related acquisitions to Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and that Kim and powerful party secretary Jo Yong Won are managing the group’s activities themselves.
She keeps turning up like a bad penny, Kim Yo Jong. So far her main claim to fame – apart of course from being the sister of the Supreme leader and therefore a scion of the sacred Mt Paektu bloodline – has been hurling insults at South Korea, and looking grim. Dealing with major technology-related matters now? Well, why not?
I don't envy those first test subjects, though.

Poor practice and inadequate services
ing-left: 40px”>
The service did not record how many patients had a diagnosis, or suspected diagnosis, of an autistic spectrum disorder. We reviewed a sample of 22 records, more than half of which referred to autistic spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Discussions with staff about autistic spectrum disorders focused on the communication needs of these patients. Records did not demonstrate consideration of the relationship between autistic spectrum disorder and gender dysphoria. That’s despite the fact that in a report to the Tavistock board in 2018, David Bell raised concerns about the high percentage of the GIDS caseload with autism. And he’s far from the only person to raise this issue. Yet even during an inspection carried out in October 2020, the GIDS was not addressing the questions that report raised.
Elsewhere, the CQC highlights the longstanding and unexplained skew in the GIDS caseload towards girls. It also raises some questions about the ethnicity of that caseload, questions which bear much more investigation.
An official investigation has now shown the sort of poor practice and inadequate services that can persist when criticism and questions around gender treatment for children are ignored. The warnings and the whistleblowers were ignored for too long. Now that’s been proven to be a harmful mistake, we can only hope that questions and concerns about issues such as the relationship between gender and autism will finally be properly addressed.
I Get a Kick Out Of You
Just a man and a piano. Well, there's a trio somewhere there, but not so as you'd notice. Errol Garner gives a virtuoso display with the Cole Porter classic:

It seems so effortless. He even has time to look around and smile.
Best known, of course, for Misty – which I featured Sarah Vaughan singing a couple of weeks back.
Everything is up for grabs
x”>Biden will be hailed as 'progressive' for this initiative, but don't be fooled: gender identity is about a feeling that some people claim to possess. And when this feeling displaces biological sex as a means of dividing society we should all worry. After all, if we ignore sex, we ignore sexism.
Worryingly, too, this order could sweep away girls' sex-based rights. The first paragraph tells us this:
'Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports.'
Let’s be clear about what this means in reality: boys who identify as girls could soon be able to use girls' locker rooms, even if girls using those facilities feel uncomfortable about that. And in school sports, boys who identify as girls could soon be competing alongside girls, despite often having physical advantages, such as being stronger or taller than their peers.
This isn't simply my interpretation of Biden's order. The order cites a Supreme Court ruling – Bostock v Clayton County – to argue that sex discrimination laws covers discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Within 100 days, plans will need to be drawn up to ensure that boys who identify as girls are not discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity.
So, boys in the girls' locker room, and men competing in women's sport and getting access to woman-only safe spaces like rape crisis centres. Wonderful.
The very laws that were established to protect the rights of girls to single sex toilets, changing rooms and sports could soon be turned upside down by presidential decree. Legislation that was intended to protect the rights of girls to single-sex provision could now make single-sex services impossible. Assuming, that is, you agree with me that sex is determined by our biology and not by feelings in our heads, you'll share in my view that this is bad news. If you disagree with me, then you may well think I am an appalling transphobic bigot.
This is not about me, however; it is about girls in America. If they want to avoid being labelled as transphobic – or worse – they will be expected to make room for boys who identify as girls. And not just in the locker room. Scholarships, bursaries, protected places in politics and public life: everything is up for grabs.

On the Basis of Gender identity
e-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation/?fbclid=IwAR37g4L8CUb7yeDs3pBTQHRDD4Wl0tx-Zln0RuU9DREhealAbDr2SIym1_E”>Executive Order "on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation".
It is the policy of my Administration to prevent and combat discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation, and to fully enforce Title VII and other laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation.
Does this mean what I think it means, in terms of, say, trans women playing women's sport or having access to women-only spaces? Abigail Shrier (author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters) certainly thinks so:
On day 1, Biden unilaterally eviscerates women's sports. Any educational institution that receives federal funding must admit biologically-male athletes to women's teams, women's scholarships, etc.
A new glass ceiling was just placed over girls.
Sea Shanty time
Apparently Sea Shanty TikTok is a thing: is indeed the "perfect expression of masculinity for 2021". Well OK. More at this Metafilter post.
In the meantime this, from the Bristol-based The Longest Johns, is very much on the life-affirming side:

And here, based around the the old NZ sea shanty "Soon May the Wellerman Come", is the song that seems to have started it all. But messed around with a bit.
