Formally implementing a gender inclusive language policy

p style=”padding-left: 40px”>A policy document released this week states that staff should not stop using the word “woman” or other terms describing motherhood but they should consciously start adding in the word “people” and other more inclusive language.

It says: “Gender identity can be a source of oppression and health inequality. We are consciously using the words ‘women’ and ‘people’ together to make it clear that we are committed to working on addressing health inequalities for all those who use our services….

“We also recognise that there is currently biological essentialism and transphobia present within elements of mainstream birth narratives and discourse. We strive to protect our trans and non-binary service users and healthcare professionals from additional persecution as a consequence of terminology changes, recognising the significant impact this can have on psychological and emotional wellbeing."

There's that "biological essentialism" again. Otherwise known as science.

‘Woman or person’? They do realise, do they, that that implies women aren’t human?

I’m making a prediction for 2021. Someone will point out that it is transphobic to assume the “usual” pronouns for historical figures, since “usual” assumes cis and not trans. Why should we give the pronouns he / him to Thomas Jefferson? Jefferson, living innocently before Judith Butler, never had the opportunity to announce a gender, so really no one knows if he was male or female. So we need pronouns for “undetermined gender”. Serious historians will soon write, “Jefferson, before ze became president, wrote zirs Declaration of Independence.”

I suppose that could be the next step. We’ve already had the transgender identification of George Eliot – https://mickhartley.typepad.com/blog/2020/11/george-eliots-transgender-identification.html
