Long Live the Sacred Bloodline of Mt Paektu, you miserable peasants.

Long Live the Sacred Bloodline of Mt Paektu, you miserable peasants.
Well maybe not that last bit. That's understood.
A friend of mine visited NK as part of a diplomatic delegation, about twenty years ago. There was a state banquet as part of the proceedings. It included steak, served Western-style, tasty enough. My friend’s Korean neighbour at dinner asked what she made of it. She made suitably appreciative noises. The Korean replied: “I’m glad you liked it… it’s the Dear Leader’s favourite… donkey!”
Which brings me to a second food-related diplomatic story about NK from the same era. A Finnish diplomat accredited to North Korea paid a visit from Beijing. He asked to visit the provinces, to gauge the situation outside the capital. He was duly despatched to a region known for its pastoral farming. On meeting the Provincial Governor he asked why he had seen no cattle on his trip, despite the area’s reputation. The Governor gave a despairing sigh, shrugged his shoulders and pointed at the heavens. “You heard about the satellite we launched?” “Yes, but I don’t see what has that to do with it…” “We sent all our cows into orbit.”
Ha! And now, I suppose, they’ve turned all their cows into nuclear weapons.
